"Darling, You’re a Daisy is a beautifully illustrated children’s book inspired by a mother’s desire to challenge some of the negative perceptions that can surround neurodivergence and celebrate the strengths that come with thinking differently.
Using the analogy of a field of flowers, the book explores the idea that, just as every flower is different, every brain is different too. Neurodivergent brains may experience and interact with the world in different ways, but those differences don’t make them any less valuable, capable or worthy.
It is sensitively written, using simple yet powerful language to convey the message that being different is something to celebrate, not something to hide. I particularly loved the additional features, including a glossary of neurodivergence-related terms, inspirational quotes from well-known figures, space for children to record their own thoughts and reflections, and even a fun wordsearch.
The illustrations throughout are absolutely beautiful, adding to the warmth and charm of the book without distracting from its important message.
I think this would be a lovely book for children and families, whether they have personal experience of neurodivergence or simply want to develop a greater understanding and appreciation of how differently people can experience the world. It would also make a valuable addition to a school or classroom library, providing an accessible starting point for conversations around neurodiversity and difference more broadly — including differences in culture, ethnicity, religion, disability, gender and family circumstances.
